in newtown. it's not just the white house. it's not just congress. today there's major news out of michigan where the republican governor rick snyder has vetoed legislation that would allow concealed weapons in churches and schools and day care centers. new polls show support for stricter gun control is at a ten-year high. the company that owns the gun maker that produced the rifle used in last week's massacre plans to sell it. calling the shooting a quote, water shed event. and dick sporting goods has suspend the sale of modern sporting rifles in all of their change. this is change. this is different. yet the right wing is already gearing up for a fight. fox news reports that the nra is expected to push back soon. they'll hold a news conference on friday. and republican governors still aren't convinced that guns are the problem. governor jan brewer says quote, i'm not sure additional gun control is something that needs to be addressed. i don't know how we get our arms around it. don't know how to get your arms around it? how about disarming those who shouldn't have weapons? and virginia go

that dominated the sunday morning talk shows. >> newtown. >> newtown. >> newtown. >> newtown. >> how many more? >> reporter: performers and artists now joining with 800 mayors calling for a plan to end gun violence. but wayne lapierre, the chief executive officer and public face of the national rifle association, made clear on nbc's "meet the press" that his organization will oppose legislation adding new restrictions to the sale of weapons or high-capacity ammunition magazines. >> look, i know there's a media machine in this country that wants to blame guns every time something happens. i know there's an anti-second amendment industry in this town. i know there are political elites that for 20 years always try to say it's because of american-owned guns. i'm telling what you think will make people safe. what every mom and dad will make them feel better, when they drop their kid off at school in january is if we have a police officer in that school, a good guy. >> reporter: as the last of the newtown massacre victims are laid to rest, the nra has taken the position that armed security officers

, chris. in many instances, as we saw in newtown, certainly, the person doesn't always come in the front door. and while in very specific situations, in certain schools, whether it's officers patrolling nearby or as a part of their regular duties coming into schools, this is not really a serious idea. the issue is less guns. and certainly, less semi-automatic weapons, rifles of this type. the issue is about the type of weapons that should be accessible and available to civilians. and that no one has made any legitimate argument or case as to why military-style, converted weapons, i'm not going to go through the splitting hairs argument about it's not really that, it's been converted to something else. it's a semi-automatic weapon of mass destruction. and the issue is that most civilians should not have them in the first place. they're for military or law enforcement. bottom line. >> what's your thoughts about this in writing about it? >> i say amen to just what the mayor just said. this is what i have written. there is no reason to have these sorts of assault weapons in civilian hands. t
